What Analyst Grade II really tests

Biggest block: Paper I: Current events (15%). How questions are asked.

APPSC notification 21/2026 fills 18 Analyst Grade-II posts in the AP Pollution Control Board, open to Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology or Environmental Sciences graduates. One online written exam (two 150-question papers, 1/3 negative marking) decides rank; no interview, but you must pass a Computer Proficiency Test.

Based on Paper I figures come from APPSC's 2022 and 2025 Assistant Statistical Officer papers (294 questions, same syllabus); no Analyst Paper II has been analysed.

Difficulty in the real papers

  • Easy 46%
  • Medium 39%
  • Hard 15%
  • History, geography and current events made up about 40% of Paper I in 2022 and 2025: the biggest new reading for science graduates.
  • Environment plus disaster management gave about 20 Paper I questions, so your Paper II environmental science reading pays twice.
  • General science gave only 11 (2022) and 9 (2025) questions; a science degree does not carry Paper I.
  • Polity jumped from 3 to 16 questions in 2025, and 2025 was easier (87 easy questions vs 49), so accuracy beats depth.

How questions are asked

  • Paper I: mostly direct questions (112 of 149 in 2022, 77 of 145 in 2025)
  • Paper I 2025: 23 match-the-following and 9 multi-statement items
  • Paper I: numerical items fell from 20 (2022) to 7 (2025)
  • Paper II: four-option MCQs; any numerical answers typed on a virtual keypad

A 12-week plan for Analyst Grade II

5 phases, week by week

Assumes a B.Sc graduate in one of the four subjects studying 4 to 5 hours a day; start Paper II with the blocks outside your degree.

  1. Weeks 1-3

Paper II: the blocks outside your degree

    • Biology/environment graduates: start chemistry with Beer-Lambert law, Rf values, GC and HPLC detectors
    • Chemistry graduates: start biochemistry with enzyme inhibition, catalytic triad, trypsin vs chymotrypsin
    • Everyone: immunoglobulins, ELISA, hypersensitivity types; Paper I current events 1 hour a day
  2. Weeks 4-6

Paper II: finish chemistry and biochemistry

    • Photochemistry (quantum yield, Jablonski diagram), carbon and sulphur allotropes, Wade's rules for boranes
    • Organic: isoprene rule, Paal-Knorr, Biginelli and Suzuki reactions
    • Clinical biochemistry: jaundice types, liver enzymes, vitamin deficiencies, thyroid and pituitary disorders
  3. Weeks 7-8

Paper II: biology and environmental science

    • Cell biology and genetics: bacteria, viruses, Mendelian ratios, one Hardy-Weinberg problem a day
    • Molecular biology: nucleosome, A, B and Z DNA, Meselson-Stahl, transcription and translation
    • Ecology: energy pyramids, succession, greenhouse gases, ozone; Paper I polity and economy
  4. Weeks 9-10

Paper I general studies and reasoning

    • AP history, the national movement, and geography of India and AP
    • Reasoning and data analysis by hand daily: calculators are banned in the hall
    • One short timed Paper II set per block each day
  5. Weeks 11-12

Full mocks, error log and the computer test

    • Full mocks for both papers twice a week with negative marking; try APPSC's CBRT mock
    • Keep an error log by syllabus line; revise only those lines in the last week
    • Typing and office practice 30 minutes, three times a week, for the Computer Proficiency Test

Mistakes that cost marks

5 traps seen in the real papers
  • Studying only your own degree subject: Paper II covers all four subjects, with no block-wise weights notified.
  • Searching misspelt syllabus words: 'Zingeberine' is zingiberene, 'blotin' biotin, 'rybozyme' ribozyme, 'witting reaction' the Wittig reaction.
  • Preparing Paper II in Telugu: it is English only, so learn English names of reactions, enzymes and tests.
  • Blind guessing: with 1/3 cut per wrong answer, answer only when you can eliminate at least one option.
  • Skipping the Computer Proficiency Test: failing it ends selection even with a top written rank.
