Paper II: Geology

150 questions · 150 min · 150 marks

A degree-standard B.Sc Geology paper in four parts and 11 sections, with no marks per part. It names exact minerals, ores, fossil groups and supergroups, so it rewards precise recall and stereographic-net problems.

Each wrong answer costs 1/3 of a mark (0.33), as every question in both papers is worth 1 mark (G.O.Ms.No.235, Finance, 06/12/2016).

Each wrong answer costs 1/3 of the marks for that question.

A 16-week plan for Technical Assistant Mines

5 phases, week by week

Assumes a B.Sc Geology graduate with about 3 hours a day; the exam date is not announced, so if it comes sooner keep the order and shorten each phase.

  1. Weeks 1-3

Paper II Part I (a, b): the Earth, volcanoes, earthquakes, plate tectonics, geomorphology

    • Earth's interior, volcanoes, earthquake intensity against magnitude, isostasy and plate tectonics
    • Geomorphology: weathering, cycle of erosion, drainage patterns, landforms, elements of remote sensing
    • Paper I: geography of India and AP, disaster management, then the National Movement
  2. Weeks 4-7

Paper II Part II: crystallography, mineralogy, economic geology

    • Crystallography, optics and the 10 named mineral groups in one table; silicate structures
    • Economic geology: one card per ore with ore minerals and main Indian belts; coal, petroleum
    • Paper I: economy and planning, and one reasoning set a day
  3. Weeks 8-10

Paper II Part III: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic petrology

    • Igneous: Bowen's reaction series, binary systems, classification, textures, the named rock groups
    • Sedimentary and metamorphic: quartz arenite against arkose against greywacke, Barrovian zones, facies
    • Paper I: polity and governance, data analysis (mean, median, mode, variance)
  4. Weeks 11-13

Paper II Part I (c) and Part IV: structural and field geology, paleontology, stratigraphy of India

    • Structural geology: folds, faults, true against apparent dip; 10 stereographic-net problems a week
    • Paleontology and stratigraphy: one sheet per fossil group; time scale; Dharwar, Vindhyan, Gondwana, Siwalik
    • Paper I: sustainable development and environment, general science and S&T
  5. Weeks 14-16

Full mocks, error log, current events and the computer test

    • Two full mocks a week for each paper; keep an error log by section
    • Revise 12 months of current events, AP schemes and mining and mineral news
    • Typing and Office practice (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), 30 minutes three times a week

Mistakes that cost marks

5 traps seen in the real papers
  • Giving Paper I less time: both papers are 150 marks, so a Paper I mark counts as much as Geology.
  • Skipping paleontology and stratigraphy: the syllabus names eight fossil groups and four rock groups; these are short, fact-based sections.
  • Learning ores as a mineral list: learn the ore mineral, deposit type and Indian belt together.
  • Leaving stereographic-net and outcrop problems to the end; they need practice by hand.
  • Guessing freely: a wrong answer costs 1/3 of a mark, so rule out at least one option first.
