What AMVI really tests

Biggest block: Paper I: Current events (15%). How questions are asked.

AMVI is an AP Transport Service post with 50 vacancies (notification 36/2026), for Mechanical or Automobile engineers with an HTV driving licence and 3 years' driving. One computer-based exam, no screening: Paper II Automobile Engineering is 300 of 450 marks, so it decides the result.

Based on Paper I only: the common Paper I from APPSC's 2022 and 2025 ASO exams (294 questions, final keys). No previous AMVI Paper II was analysed.

Difficulty in the real papers

  • Easy 46%
  • Medium 39%
  • Hard 15%
  • One Paper II question is worth two Paper I questions: 10 extra right answers in Paper II equal 20 in Paper I.
  • The Paper II syllabus matches the 2018 AMVI scheme, but its marks doubled from 150 to 300, now two-thirds of the total.
  • History, geography and current events gave 124 of 294 Paper I questions, about 42%.
  • Polity jumped from 3 questions in 2022 to 16 in 2025; do not skip it.

How questions are asked

  • Paper I: mostly direct one-liners (112 of 149 in 2022, 77 of 145 in 2025)
  • Paper I: match-the-following (23) and multi-statement (9) questions appeared in 2025
  • Paper I: numerical items fell from 20 in 2022 to 7 in 2025
  • Paper II: many formula topics, so expect short numericals as well as recall

A 16-week plan for AMVI

5 phases, week by week

For a mechanical or automobile graduate or diploma holder with about 4 hours a day; if the exam comes sooner, keep the order and shorten phases.

  1. Weeks 1-3

    Paper II engine fundamentals (items 1, 2, 6, 7, 8)

    • Item 1: laws of thermodynamics, steady-flow energy equation, Rankine cycle on T-s and Mollier charts
    • Items 2, 6-8: Otto, Diesel, dual cycles; octane, cetane; knock; firing orders
    • Paper I: Indian National Movement and modern AP history
  2. Weeks 4-6

    Paper II mechanics and materials (items 3, 4, 5, 10, 22, 23)

    • Items 3-5: gear trains, torsion equation for shafts, screw jack efficiency and self-locking
    • Items 10, 22, 23: engine balancing, iron-carbon diagram, heat treatment, sensors and control
    • Paper I: geography of India and AP, economy and planning
  3. Weeks 7-10

Paper II vehicle systems (items 9, 11 to 17, 19)

    • Items 9, 11-14: fuel injection, lubrication, cooling, gear boxes, differential, clutch torque capacity
    • Items 15-17, 19: brakes, Ackermann steering, ignition and electricals, car air conditioning
    • Paper I: polity, sustainable development, disaster management
  4. Weeks 11-13

Paper II emissions, alignment, tyres and traffic rules (items 18, 20, 21)

    • Item 18: SI and CI emissions, Bharat Stage norms, catalytic converter, EGR, DPF, SCR
    • Items 20-21: wheel alignment, tyres, traffic signs and Motor Vehicles Act 1988
    • Paper I: science and technology, daily reasoning and data-analysis sets
  5. Weeks 14-16

Full mocks, error log, current events and the computer test

    • Two full mocks a week per paper; keep an error log by item
    • Revise 12 months of current events; cut blind guesses if wrong answers cost 10+ marks
    • Practise typing, Word, Excel and PowerPoint three times a week for the CPT

Mistakes that cost marks

5 traps seen in the real papers
  • Using the 2018 AMVI scheme: the 2026 Paper II is 300 marks with the 10-item common Paper I.
  • Giving both papers equal time. Paper II is 300 of 450 marks.
  • Skipping core mechanical items: 7 of the 23 Paper II items, and they carry the formula questions.
  • Mixing up SI and CI: octane is petrol, cetane diesel; high compression causes SI knock, reduces CI knock.
  • Guessing freely in Paper II, where a wrong answer costs 0.67; rule out an option first.
