What Lab Assistant Mining really tests

Biggest block: Paper I: Current events (15%). How questions are asked.

Notification 34/2026 fills 1 Lab Assistant post in the Mining Subordinate Service for graduates with Chemistry (B.Sc.). One online (CBRT) exam decides it: Paper I General Studies and Paper II Chemistry, 150 marks each, with 1/3 mark cut per wrong answer.

Based on No previous Paper II was analysed; Paper I figures come from the 2022 and 2025 APPSC Assistant Statistical Officer Paper I (294 questions), same 10-item syllabus.

Paper I

  1. Current events15%
  2. History of India & AP14%
  3. Geography of India & AP13%
  4. Economy & planning12%
  5. Reasoning & analytical ability11%
  6. Sustainable development & environment9%
  7. Data analysis8%
  8. General science & S&T7%
  9. Polity & governance6%
  10. Disaster management5%
Share of each paper's questions, by topic, in the real papers.

Difficulty in the real papers

  • Easy 46%
  • Medium 39%
  • Hard 15%
  • Current events, history and geography gave 124 of 294 questions (about 42%), with a focus on Andhra Pradesh.
  • Polity rose from 3 questions in 2022 to 16 in 2025; do not skip it.
  • General science gave only about 7%, so your chemistry degree helps little in Paper I; the other nine items decide it.
  • With 1/3 negative marking, a blind guess gains nothing on average; ruling out one option makes a guess gain about 0.11 marks.

How questions are asked

  • Paper I: mostly direct questions (112 in 2022, 77 in 2025)
  • Paper I: 2025 added 23 match-the-following and 9 multi-statement items
  • Paper I: numerical items 20 (2022) and 7 (2025)
  • Paper II: no previous paper analysed; the format is not known

Yes: each wrong answer loses 1/3 of the question's marks (G.O.Ms.No.235, 06/12/2016), so 0.33 marks in both papers.

Each wrong answer costs 1/3 of the marks for that question.

A 16-week plan for Lab Assistant Mining

5 phases, week by week

The exam date is not announced; this plan assumes about four months at 3-4 hours a day, split evenly between the two 150-mark papers.

  1. Weeks 1-2

Check eligibility and map both papers

    • Read the detailed notification for age limit and category; apply by 26/11/2026.
    • Mark each of the 28 Paper II items strong, weak or not studied.
    • Take one full Paper I mock in 150 minutes; start a Paper II formula sheet.
  2. Weeks 3-6

Paper II physical chemistry; Paper I history and geography

    • Section C items 3.1-3.10, about two items a week.
    • Solve numericals by hand: van der Waals, pH, cell e.m.f., half-life, freezing-point depression.
    • Paper I, 90 minutes a day: history and geography of India and AP.
  3. Weeks 7-10

Paper II inorganic chemistry; Paper I polity and economy

    • Section A items 1.1-1.10: atomic structure, periodic trends, bonding, redox, HSAB.
    • Learn the item 1.6 compounds and the extraction of the eight metals in item 1.7.
    • Paper I: polity and governance, then Indian economy and planning.
  4. Weeks 11-13

Paper II organic chemistry; Paper I environment and disaster management

    • Section B items 2.1-2.8, with R/S and E/Z stereochemistry practice.
    • Spectroscopy (item 2.8): IR ranges, UV of conjugated systems, basic NMR.
    • Paper I: environment, disaster management with remote sensing and GIS, general science.
  5. Weeks 14-16

Current events, reasoning, the CPT and full mocks

    • Current events of the last 12 months; timed reasoning and data analysis sets daily.
    • Practise office software and typing for the Computer Proficiency Test.
    • Four full mocks of each paper; count wrong answers and cut them.

Mistakes that cost marks

5 traps seen in the real papers
  • Treating Paper I as less important: it carries 150 of the 300 marks, the same as Chemistry.
  • Relying on memory of your B.Sc.: check that named items like carboranes, pseudohalogens, HSAB and Michaelis-Menten are in your notes.
  • Skipping physical chemistry numericals; a CBRT exam gives no time to derive Nernst, Arrhenius or Clausius-Clapeyron.
  • Guessing every unknown: each wrong answer costs 1/3 mark, so rule out one option first.
  • Not reading the detailed notification: the brief notice omits the age limit and the post's category.
