1.1.3 Blood relations and direction sense notes

5 notes, in reading order.

  1. 1.1.3.1Blood relations: direct statements and family trees

  2. 1.1.3.2Coded blood relations and family puzzles

  3. 1.1.3.3Direction sense: turns and final direction

Give every direction an angle (North 0°, East 90°, South 180°, West 270°), count clockwise turns as plus and anticlockwise as minus, add them up, and read the final angle back as a direction.

  4. 1.1.3.4Distance and displacement: shortest distance and shadow problems

Add up all the East–West moves and all the North–South moves separately; the shortest distance is √(x² + y²) and the direction comes from the signs of x and y. For shadows, the sun is in the East in the morning and in the West in the evening, and the shadow falls the opposite way.

  5. 1.1.3.5Mixed puzzles: blood relations with direction, seating or profession clues
